3D Scan to STEP file Conversion of Plastic Parts

3D scan to STEP file conversion is a crucial step in the design and manufacturing process. STEP files are industry-standard files that can be used to share and exchange 3D models between different CAD software applications.

Steps

The steps involved in converting the plastic 3D scan to STEP files are as follows:

Mesh Data Optimization:

Import the 3D scan data into Fusion 360. Align the scan data with the origin. Remesh the mesh data to reduce the number of triangles and improve performance.

Adding Reference Planes:

Use the Construction Plane tool to create a construction plane. Sketch the silhouette of the object, which is the base of the object.

Adding Features:

Extrude the sketches to the desired height and length to create the object. During this process, keep the sketch constraints as loose as possible so that they can be easily adjusted by dragging the sketches. Once the sketch appears to be close to the 3D scan, add the sketch constraints and fully define the sketch geometry.

Fillets and Chamfers:

Add fillets and chamfers to the object to improve its manufacturability and aesthetics. Add fillets and chamfers after all preliminary extrusions have been completed to keep the model’s performance high and to make it easier to modify the geometry parametrically.

Analysis and Evaluation:

Slice the model in different directions and measure different areas and line segments to assess the accuracy of the conversion. Carefully inspect the final model to ensure that no features are missing from the original 3D scan file.
